Christchurch, New Zealand rocked by powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake

Building facades collapsed, roads ripped like paper and power lines fell when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck New Zealand's South Island. The temblor, occurring at 4:35am local time, appears to have not claimed any lives despite being so powerful. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck a mere 30 miles west of New Zealand's second largest city, Christchurch. The earthquake was at a relatively shallow depth of 3.1 miles beneath the surface and was followed by a magnitude 5.7 aftershock less than 20 minutes later.Get more details on the location of the…

Another oil platform explodes off La. coast

For the second time this year, another oil platform has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, again off the Louisiana coast. The blast which was reported by the US Coast Guard, occurred Thursday at around 10:30 am, leaving the Vermilion Oil Rig 380 in flames. It represents the second such incident in four months time. The Coast Guard reports that there is no leak, and no fatalities. One worker was reported to have been injured.
All 13 people working aboard the rig at the time of the blast, are reported to be safe. They were flown to a hospital in Houma, Louisiana for medical evaluation.
